The Ancient Greek concept of the elements typically refers to earth, water, fire and air which were proposed to explain the nature and complexity of all matter. Dating from pre-Socratic times, this theory persisted throughout the Middle Ages and into the Renaissance, deeply influencing European thought and culture.
Javier Leon Perez’s works in Japanese paper and vivid, concentrated Chinese ink and pigments from a distance appear to reflect aerial land and seascapes. On close examination, one is captivated by the almost living, breathing repetition of patterns and rhythms. With titles such as Aura, Night, Ocean and Atmosphere, the works seem to reflect the very essence of being, the basic elements of life itself.
