Oil
on canvas
The oil painting process means a return to my origins. I remember that, at the age of eight, my parents gave me my first canvas and my first case of brushes and oil colors. I experienced this event with great excitement, as I was patiently waiting for it for a long time. I made my preparatory drawings for months and then, when the day came, I painted them in oils. When I painted my first oil painting it was very exciting for me and my family encouraged me to continue painting, and certainly that was a big boost for my future development as an artist. I understood this idea of slowly forming an image through superimposed layers, which were superimposed on the canvas like a stratum. I developed an almost monastic patience and wait that was necessary for the layers of paint to dry and the next to be applied. At the age of 16 I entered the School of Arts and Crafts of Seville, where I mainly learned the techniques of life drawing that would serve me for what later meant admission to the Faculty of Fine Arts at the University of Seville, where I specialized in the branch of painting, assimilating the classical pictorial tradition that was taught there. That is why now returning to oil painting in some way represents a revision of a tradition and a return to the most intimate aspects of my being.
I work with models that I build myself with paper, which allow me to explore effects of light and shadow, shape and space that become illusion on the surface of the painting. Within these paper models, I perceive an internal geometry, a hidden order that resonates with an inherent harmony in the universe. These models, in some way, are evocative of the classic still life compositions of previous times, they transcend the mere representation of objects. They are an exploration of existence, a mirror where I reflect myself while reflecting that tradition and through paper a meditation on the ephemeral nature of life.
Painting serves as introspective work that leads me to open deep doors of my own consciousness. These canvases are not mere images; They are a elaboration process that allows me to delve not only into the painting itself, but also into my own psyche.
Color, for me, is the chromatic symphony of emotions, and plays a fundamental role in my artistic vocabulary. It is not just a representation tool, but a language of the soul. The mixture of colors in the palette symbolizes a slow alchemy where chromatic nuances emerge with a close relationship with my own psyche.
My textures are a poetics of referring to the idea of infinity. The sensory poetry of my works is a form of message that relates, makes the intention, says, points… but sometimes it does not intend to say anything and it is in that silence when poetry acts as a fertile place where new possibilities arise.
In my artwork on paper there is no appear the concept of pain and that is precisely why he refers to it. It is one of his paradoxes. In the context of a global pandemic and a war in Europe, despite the bleak panorama and the enormous suffering that this generates, it is necessary for the most human feelings to emerge forcefully to maintain the “balance” in this existence. Search for something that makes us aware again and allows us to reconnect with that global consciousness that synchronously unites us and be able to see more clearly the infinite connections that humanity shares. Finding that “something” is everyone’s job.
If the artwork is contains a soul, is capable of generating with its environment what I call “atmosphere of unity” and can make the cosmic flow sensitive to human perception.
The right hemisphere of the brain is that of intuition and the left that of the rational mind. The stimulation of sensitivity can open doors that are usually closed since everything in our society is focused on covering up that sensitivity. Sensitivity makes us more empathetic. It is necessary to focus on seeking a virtuous balance. For me, paper is the metaphor of sensitive skin. A Skin as a barrier or border between who you are and where the other begins, but it is permeable and very porous.
I have always aspired to create a philosophy of paper, with its own language, with its own form of expression, with its own way of manifesting itself in reality. To speak of the sensitivity of paper is to speak of its vulnerability-and also of its versatility and ability to adapt to the environment.
