The idea of “vacuum” was called “Ether” in ancient Greece, and they understood it as a substance found in those places with no matter. Democritus and especially Epicurus spoke of matter and how it was made up of indivisible elementary particles (atoms) that were suspended in a vacuum. The vacuum is the medium where atoms float. We speak of horror vacui to refer to that discomfort that we Westerners express when faced with that feeling of empty space. Perhaps that horror that the “emptiness” produces in us because it has the virtue of clearly reflecting ourselves, and this is not always pleasant. It also shows us our shadow, as Jung would say.
Drawing in a meditative way somehow reconciles me with that fear of the feeling of absence and makes us see that in reality in that absence is the germ of something new and in turn that absence is understood as something positive and necessary for the Drawing is given. In traditional meditation techniques, there is talk of “emptying oneself” as a precondition so that in some way a meditative way of proceeding can be generated.
In the ESTRUPTURE OF THE VAACUM series, the drawing is organized following a structured logic that is very close to the idea of a fractal. The volumetric illusion is given by tonal gradients made with graphite. The work process consists of making a network of drawing lines in a scribbled way that are intertwined, generating a texture of unity.
